Best books for Preschoolers!
Chances are, you’ve read my last post and learned a little about shared book reading and why it is important for parents and teachers to ensure that they are doing it when reading! In a nutshell, I want you to consider the following strategies when shared book reading with your child(ren).
Begin the story by sharing the title, front and back of the book, spine of the book and talk about the author and illustrator and the role they play in the creation of the book you will read. Ask your child(ren) to infer what they think the story might be about by viewing the pictures on the front of the book.
Read the story aloud to your child(ren). Leave room for your child(ren) to make inferences before turning the page. This is not a time that children should simply be quiet and listen to the story, real comprehension takes place when children are prompted to think during the story and not just discussing what they liked about the story or answering questions after the story has been completed.
Ensure that there is a pause after the story, just incase your child(ren) have thoughts, or questions that they would like to share or ask. This is an excellent time to talk about the characters in the story, where the story took place, and what occurred. One fun question that I love to ask children at the end of the story is, “What would you change about the ending of this story?” This gives them an opportunity to either retell the story or make up a completely different, sometime silly, ending!
Don’t worry! You got this and you can do it! Below, I’ve listed some of my favorite books that I love to practice shared reading when I read to my children, both students and my daughters!
Here are some of the best books that I personally recommend for Preschoolers:
Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Bill Martin Jr.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault
Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! by Mo Willems
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
I guarantee that each of these books will enable you to use the shared reading strategies listed above!
